“We collect and sell plastic waste to support the team’s activities!” was just one of the initiatives brought to life through football last Saturday at the Goal Project Arena, Kasarani.
The day brought together teams including Mathare River FC, Dandora Legends FC, Kasacity FC and Lucky Summer Allstars, among others. The matches were intense, the competition was high, and the fans brought the energy. But beyond football, we came together for a greater purpose: climate action.
Through moments of climate advocacy and awareness, footballers, fans and everyone present discussed practical ways to protect our environment from reducing plastic waste and keeping our playing spaces clean, to planting and caring for trees and protecting green spaces.
The scorching sun and dust-filled air made the need for greener spaces even more real.
After the matches, we planted and watered trees around our pitch planting the shade we hope to enjoy in the future.
These seedlings may take years to grow, but one day they will provide shade for players cooling down after a match, comfortable spaces for fans, cleaner air, and perhaps even a few mangoes to enjoy.
That is the kind of impact we planted on Saturday.
Our sincere thanks to the Ubunifu Hub Youth Programme, with the support of Greenpeace Africa, for creating a platform that demonstrates how powerful football can be in driving climate action.
As Sports for Greener Environment, we are proud to be part of this movement.
